Title: SS
1. Describe: This piece depicts a woman's face being zoomed in. She neither said nor happy, but shes smirking at the camera-- so maybe a playful expression.
2. Analyze: I used texture to create contrast in her face.
3. Interpret: The message I'm conveying is no emotion.
4. Judge: I think the piece is successful because I succeeded in making it look realistic.
Artist Statement:
My inspiration for this piece is to show that I have improved-- my piece looks more realistic than my last portrait piece. And the eyes of the picture I decided to draw really caught my attention and I wanted to challenge myself to draw them as accurate as I could.
The process I did was starting off with the outline of the person's face, then I started mapping out her eyebrows as well as her eyes then nose and lips. Afterwards, I started on the hair. Medium shading-- to dark then I did the highlights. Finally I started shading the rest of her to make the piece look realistic.
Perfume
Pen & Ink
Cross Contour
Title: Perfume
1. Describe: This piece depicts an old perfume bottle. The background brings out its serene tone, being that it's a light pink and purple, as if its the actual mist of perfume.
2. Analyze: I used line to create contrast in my piece. It took me several tries to have one side of my piece have a shadow depending on where the light source is coming from.
3. Interpret: The meaning I am conveying is how things change. In the piece is an old perfume bottle. Nowadays, perfume bottles doesn't look like it does in this piece.
4. Judge: I think my piece is successful because my whole purpose for choosing this was because I wanted to challenge myself to make things more 3D than I have before.
Artist Statement:
My inspiration for this piece was like how I explained above. I felt like this perfume bottle expresses how things have changed such as how the bottles switched until they were satisfied with the look.
The process for this piece was first I decided to watercolor the background a light pink and purple because those are the two colors I think about when perfume comes to mind. Afterwards, I let it dry and started drawing. After finally getting done outlining the piece, I started with pen and ink. The more I tested it out on my four sketches before adding any extra details.
Pokey
Watercolor
The name of my piece is POKEY. My piece depicts my tabby cat, sitting on a ledge with a brick background and a porch right near it. The most obvious elements and principals that is shown in this piece is, texture to represent variety.
The media my work is made from is watercolor. The tools I used to create this piece was, a round brush for details-- wet on dry. And a flat brush for the wet on wet technique, which is the very first process to get to painting. I used it to do my background.
What inspired my work overall was my little sister. In the beginning I did not know what I would do for this project but it hit me that the picture she had taken showed both Foreground, mid-ground, as well as background.
My goals as an artist as of now, is to improve in the type of medias that I am not so strong in such as painting and other things like that that involves adding color for texture. This piece definitely helped this goal because originally I am not very good at doing watercolor. Just being able to choose what I am to draw, rather than sticking to landscape or a certain item helped with my imagination on how I was to do the piece.
I learned 1 point perspective all the way up to 5 point perspective. Something I already knew about, just needed a quick refresher. Other than that, I feel like my piece could have been better. It is not because I did not have plenty of time, but because I am just not good at doing things like this. This piece will help me further improve other watercolor pieces I am to do in the future.
Oil Lamp
Pen and ink/ acrylic & artist paste
Surface Manipulation
The name of my piece is Oil Lamp. In my piece, it depicts an oil lamp on the left side of the paper. The rest of the piece is covered with book pages that was painted over with watered down coffee.
I used line to create contrast with pen and ink. For this piece I used, pen and ink, artist paste, modge podge, paint, and book pages as well as pencil.
What inspiration for this piece was my interest in history. I explained how I liked history and antique things then Ariel and Summer helped me come up with a way to create a piece through my love for old things.
Doing this piece helped me come up with new ideas as I drew because in this project we got to choose what subject matter to do which helped me become more creative with what to do.
In creating this art piece, I had learned how to use and create Artist paste and I also learned how to use Modge Podge. Since this piece was based on manipulating the surface, I learned new ways to do that as well. I liked how my piece turned out but I expected it to be better. I feel like if I would have had more time then my piece would have been better idea wise.
the World's Cutest
Charcoal
Large Charcoal
The name of my piece is the WORLD'S CUTEST. This piece depicts a panda holding a bamboo limb and a leaf off of it as well. I used strong contrast to show that the panda is sitting on the ground. You can also tell the light source is coming from behind the panda because the front side is darker than the back.
I used Charcoal and some chalk to create my piece. I used the vine charcoal to do the background and the beginning of shading as the panda's fur. If I had any smudges I'd use white charcoal to go over them. I also used compressed to make the fur darker. Then, I used pencil to put the details into the fur and in the eyes.
My inspiration for this piece was ultimately my mom and my family's love for nature. My piece expresses the issue of people killing off animals or certain natural disasters that can cause animals like a panda to be extinct. Although others may see this piece as just a panda, it expresses something more.
This piece was the first time I attempted to use charcoal. My goal for this piece and as an artist is to be able to complete a piece using a certain media for the first time and actually calling it successful. I have reached my goal but I feel like I could have picked something more complex considering the fact that I am familiar with working with pandas.
Overall I learned how to use charcoal and blend colors correctly as well as putting detail into making fur. My piece is not what I imagined. I expected it to be worse than what I drew. This will influence my other piece because now if I decide to draw anything with fur-- it won't be so much of a struggle.
Love
Clay
My piece depicts clay shaped like a 3D cone (a lantern). The subject matter is to create a clay piece. The title of my work is called LOVE.
My Art is made from clay. I used coil to create this piece and the stages I went through so far was slip and plastic. Right now it is hardening. Basically going through the stage leatherhard.
What inspired my work was my religion. Originally I was supposed to display a cross on the top as the lid but I did not have enough time for it. On the piece (not described above), I put hearts all over it and the opening looked similar to the doors of the church itself.
My goals as an artist is to improve how I use my hands on clay. Maybe get a better technique. I think this goal ultimately helped my piece this time because I did do better than the last clay piece. Maybe it is because I shared an actual meaning for it besides doing it in order to get a good grade.
I learned how to create a lantern. It seemed hard at first but once you start getting the hang of repeatedly doing coil on top again and again. No, the final piece isn't what I imagined. I didn't really think about having to cut holes so sometime when the heart I drew in was too small it would just look like a circle opposed to being a heart. And I didn't get to put the cross on top just yet. But overall I succeeded.
the Lantern
Acrylic
Art show piece
My art piece is called the Lantern. It depicts the image of a lantern.though you can only see half of it, it is lit and the background shows a brick wall. It is obvious that in my piece I used value to create contrast on the lantern.
The media I used for this piece was acrylic paint and artist paste. I got my idea from my other piece that I did before, but this time I used acrylic instead. I sketched the piece out on a canvas board and began to paint my background, Originally I had a rainbow background. I realized I had no clue what i was doing so I painted over it with white and started again. An Art 4 student suggested I made my background bricks instead so I did. I sketched it out and began painting the lantern because I had already started on it. I used the artist paste to put texture into the brick--the roughness.
I inspired my work for this piece because I got my ideas from the last. Both kind of had the same meaning, but I felt it'd look better with a different media. My artwork expresses the history of us all. How we came to be... from social issues to strength of us all working together. Yet, this is all portrayed by a lantern--which is old an may still be used today.
My goals as an artist still remain the same as before. I mean, I did reach my goals for this current project though, which was being able to convert the original piece into something better with a different media and possibly another meaning.
In the creation of the piece, I learned that whenever doing a painting in acrylic, I am not to have the canvas board showing at all but I need to paint every part. The final piece is better than I imagined. In my head, I never actually pictured it with a brick background. Though adding it in made the piece look good altogether.
the Flamingo with a Book for Wings
Acrylic
Master's Style
The title of this piece is the Flamingo with a Book for Wings. The piece depicts an image of two flamingos, necks curved to where there beaks are touching each others and it looks somewhat heart-shaped. Considering that the piece is not necessarily realistic, it is made in surrealism form. I used color to show unity in my piece.
For this piece, I used Acrylic paint and a fine point pen. Not only that but, I had to use a round and flat brush. In order for me to do this piece with little to know mistakes, I started with my background then did bigger areas, afterwards I did the details needed.
My goals as an artist with Acrylic was always to improve. I've never been to good in trying to make something look realistic with paint. So I can say that I achieved that goal.
Ultimately, I learned a new way to blend paint easy-- to me it is. But, what I did was rub my finger on it so the colors could mix easily. This piece turned out better than I imagined it'd be so I am proud of myself. Knowing that I can make my paintings look somewhat realistic, it'll help me improve for future paintings.
